Phase 01 · Understand
Observe, interview, surface
UX research with stakeholders and end users. Review existing applications, identify pain points, update user stories.
Sprint N+1 addition
Analyze design debt from Sprint N — what shipped vs. what was designed, what users flagged in "show and tell."
Phase 02 · Sketch
Diverge, then refine
Sketch and whiteboard divergent ideas for the chosen user stories. Refine requirements with the BA and Tech Architect.
Sprint N+1 addition
Fix design-debt backlog items surfaced in Understand — close the loop on quality issues from the prior sprint.
Phase 03 · Decide
Narrow to one direction
Align on features, performance, and portfolio approach. Select the solution direction the team will commit to building.
Output
A single, defensible direction — agreed by UX, BA, Tech, and Product Owner before any pixels are pushed.
Phase 04 · Prototype
Build a clickable artifact
Create interactive prototypes from the validated direction. Validate with the BA, Tech Architect, and end users — refine on feedback.
Output
An artifact the team can use, break, and argue about — far cheaper than arguing about code.
Phase 05 · Test
Show, tell, handoff
Show-and-tell with end users. Finalize the design and hand off to development with annotated specs.
Closes the loop
Feedback, design-vs-built gaps, and new user stories from testing all become inputs to Sprint N+1's Understand phase.
